If you’ve always wanted to live out your David Attenborough dreams but were held back by the “roughing it” aspect of the great outdoors, you’ll love Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica. This award winning eco lodge is set in a 42,000-acre private concession adjacent to the Tambopata National Reserve, a wildlife haven close to the Bolivian border. Made up of thirty-five thatched wooden cabañas, Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica offers their guests unparalleled luxury in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, where they can spot caimans, anteaters and howler monkeys by day and retreat into their plunge pool and hammocks come evening.

Top Tips

• While Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica pride themselves on providing lush comfort to their guests, it is worth remembering that they are still an eco resort and therefore, do things a little differently. Because the resort is dedicated to preserving their beautiful surrounds, there will be times, usually in the middle of the night, when they turn off the electricity. And because of the somewhat remote location of the resort, there is no cellphone or television service (not like you’ll miss it). Other than that, you will be sharing the resort with various bugs and critters so make sure that you stock up on bug repellent before your trip.

• Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica is made up of 35 thatched wooden cabanas in the Ese Eja style (inspired by the indigenous people of that name) that are scattered across the resort’s lush grounds. There are 4 types of cabanas including the superior, the superior rio, the Amazonica suite and the Tambopata suite. While all the suites are equally lush and well appointed, previous guests have recommended booking any one of the river view suites for an added experience. If you’re looking to up the ante during your stay, the Tambopata suite comes with your very own plunge pool to cool off in.

• The piece de resistance of Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica is definitely the guided excursions on offer at the resort. The excursions come in quarter-day, half-day and full-day; so whether you have a little time or a lot of time, there is an excursion suited for you! There are other additional excursions available like a one-day tour downriver to the scintillating Valencia oxbow lake or a bird watching experience accompanied by an Inkaterra Explorer Guide; it is worth noting that these tours need to be booked in advance and come at an additional cost.

• While Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica might feel super remote and far away from civilisation, it’s actually really easy to reach from two nearby cities; Cusco which is only 35 minutes away by air plus transfer, or Lima which is an hour and 40 minutes away plus transfer. All flights land at Puerto Maldonado, which is a 45 minutes boat ride down the tranquil Madre de Dios river. Transfers to and from the airport can be arranged with the hotel but need to be booked in advance.

• After a long day of exploring the South American rainforest, why not find refuge at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica’s in-house spa, Ena. Combining classic nurturing practices with the exotic ingredients of the Amazon, Ena Spa provides guests with an unforgettable, spiritually soothing experience that is entirely local.

With close to 10 years in the travel industry, it's safe to say that I'm a travel addict.

Since my first flight at 8 months of age, I've travelled extensively through Europe, Asia, the South Pacific and part of North America. Some of the highlights were sleeping under the stars in the Wahiba Sands in Oman, snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef, walking on the Great Wall of China, climbing the Eiffel Tower, cruising from St Petersburg to Moscow, eating streetfood in Penang, exploring the Rocky Mountains in Canada and hanging loose in Hawaii.

I currently spend all my time putting together epic life-changing mastermind retreats or meticulously planning Luxury Tailor-made holidays around the world.
