On the east side of Maui, away from the hoards of tourists and vacation makers, lies the island paradise that is Travaasa Hana Resort and Spa. Being on the quieter part of the island, Travaasa Hana offers visitors a tranquil escape to experience the remote beauty of Maui first-hand. While you won’t find major tourists attractions, bars or clubs on this side of the island, what you will find is a new appreciation for peace and quiet.
Top Tips
1. If you plan on driving to the resort, make sure to allow yourself an entire day to truly enjoy the drive. There are plenty of sights to see on your way to Travaasa Hana from Kahului airport, including the Garden of Eden Arboretum, the Upper Waikiki Falls, Kahanu Garden, and of course, Hana Town itself. Be mindful of the time though as driving the winding roads to and from Hana in the dark is incredibly dangerous and not recommended.
2. Because it basically takes a day-trip drive to get to Travaasa Hana, make sure to get the most out of your trip by booking an Ocean Bungalow. While the Garden rooms are just as well appointed, they lack the wow factor of the oceanfront villas.
3. Being the quieter, more remote part of Maui means that entertainment and food options are quite limited. If you’re travelling with fussy eaters, make sure to stock up on plenty of their favourite snacks to keep them happy. If you’re travelling with teenagers or children, consider filling your laptop/tablet with pre-downloaded movies and shows as the WiFi at Travaasa Hana is apparently quite slow (also, there’s very limited cellphone service). That being said, you’ll be set for activities during the daytime as the resort offers a range of experiences from horseback riding to canoeing, as well as spa treatments and yoga sessions.
4. If you’re someone who’s hoping to escape the Hawaii heat with an air conditioned hotel room then you may want to check in to another resort. All the rooms at Travaasa Hana do not have air conditioned but instead are cooled with ceiling fans, because of this they can get rather stuffy during the day especially if there is no breeze. They do however, cool off a little at night.
5. The beach directly in front of the Ocean Villas is not a swimming beach as the waters can get very rough. Take this as an opportunity to explore the other beaches of the area. Before you take off however, make sure to ask the friendly Travaasa Hana staff for information on which nearby beaches are safe for swimming.
