Overlooking one of the liveliest streets in the heart of Athens surrounded by designer boutiques, expensive cafés and gourmet delis is the ultra-chic and eco-friendly hotel, Coco-mat. Designed in more of a scandi-chic style, Coco-mat Hotel juxtaposes many of the other traditionally designed hotels of Athens. While guests may be taken off-guard by the entrance of the hotel being turned into somewhat of a furniture showroom, past this point they will be greeted by a welcoming cocoon of style and comfort.

Top tips

1. While all the rooms of Coco-mat hotel are equally well-appointed, many previous guests have suggested booking a room on a higher floor and to the back of the hotel. Not only do these rooms tend to be quieter the higher up you go, the rooms to the back of the hotel are also equipped with a small balcony. Pro-tip: if you can handle the noise, the street view rooms allow you to overlook and enjoy the liveliness of Kolonaki from the comfort of your own room.

2. Coco-mat characterises their rooms based on their exposure level. There are the Boulevard rooms that overlook lively Patriarchou Ioakim street, the Urban rooms that face the apartments behind the hotel, and the Sleep Tight rooms that have no view and little natural light, but are a decent size and well-appointed. So, choosing your room is just a matter of how much noise you can tolerate.

3. Where food is concerned, you are absolutely spoilt for choice at Coco-mat. There is the basement restaurant where breakfast is served, there is the roof terrace where you can enjoy your meal while overlooking almost the entirety of the Athens cityscape, last but not least, there is the Honesty Bar where guests can help themselves to drinks and snacks anytime the need for something to nibble arises. Pro tip: if you ever get tired of the hotel’s culinary offering, head over to the Kostarelos dairy next door for graviera cheese toasties and yoghurt with quince compote.

4. If you’re looking for a vibrant Greek neighbourhood to experience, you could not do any better than Coco-mat’s neighbourhood of Kolonaki. Not only is the neighbourhood lively and filled with the local beautiful people during the day, it is a great place to experience that famous hectic Greek night-life.

5. Not only are you a stone’s throw away from many of Athen’s famous attractions, you’re even close to many offbeat attractions as well. The Museum of Cycladic Art and Benaki Museum are only a few blocks away, while Acropolis is just a 20-minute (downhill) stroll from Coco-mat. If you’re looking to venture further than your feet can take you, the Evangelismos Metro station is only a five minute walk away. Pro-tip: you can even catch a direct connection to and from the airport from the Evangelismos Metro station.

With close to 10 years in the travel industry, it's safe to say that I'm a travel addict.

Since my first flight at 8 months of age, I've travelled extensively through Europe, Asia, the South Pacific and part of North America. Some of the highlights were sleeping under the stars in the Wahiba Sands in Oman, snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef, walking on the Great Wall of China, climbing the Eiffel Tower, cruising from St Petersburg to Moscow, eating streetfood in Penang, exploring the Rocky Mountains in Canada and hanging loose in Hawaii.

I currently spend all my time putting together epic life-changing mastermind retreats or meticulously planning Luxury Tailor-made holidays around the world.
