Built in the nineteenth century, each of its rooms is decorated with furniture indicative of the era’s style. Designed to make even the most wayward traveller feel at home, Planters Inn beautifully combines elegant Southern style (and hospitality) with contemporary sophistication. Set in the heart of the city’s Historic District, Planters Inn is the ideal location for anyone looking to sightsee, shop, and dine in the exciting Charleston.
Top Tips
• Offering an atmosphere of sophistication that respects the Planters Inn’s mid 19th-century heritage, the 47 rooms and 17 suites in the hotel range in size from standard kings and double queens to the grand apartment-style St. Philip Suite which is complete with a dining area and kitchen. So you’re choice of room really comes down to your budget and the space you’re looking for. Pro tip: for a feel of the Old World, book a room in the main building, but if you’re looking a more modern aesthetic, book one of the new Piazza Building’s suites. Extra pro tip: previous guests have mentioned that rooms facing the street and/or the front of the building can get quite noisy.
• If you’re hoping to get around Charleston during your stay, we advise against hiring a car as parking around the City Market is notoriously tricky, so save yourself the hassle. We recommend you set out by foot, hop on a pedicab, or hail a ride-share. Alternatively, you could always take the complimentary DASH trolley; the orange line (route 210) drives from College of Charleston to the Aquarium, the green line (route 211) takes you to the waterfront, Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, and City Market, and finally the purple line (route 213) connects Brittlebank Park and Riley Stadium to the historic city centre.
• The piece de resistance of Planters Inn has to be its amazing location within the most picturesque neighbourhood of Charleston. The Historic Downtown District has stood throughout Charleston's history as the cultural capital of the South. In this beautifully preserved city, you can experience tours through historic landmarks, monuments and some of the area's most timeless cultural sites. Pro tip: for you colonial architecture buffs, don’t miss a photo op with the distinctive Pink House built in 1694.
• The Charleston City Market is one of America’s oldest public markets and the cultural heart of Charleston. It is home to more than 300 vibrant entrepreneurs, and is open every day of the year except Christmas day. No matter what time of day or season you plan to visit, there is something to see, do, taste, and take home as a souvenir! Pro tip: during your visit to the City Market, do yourself a favour and pick up a sweetgrass basket (or two); one of the nation's oldest and most beautiful handicrafts of African origin.
• While Charleston is lively and vibrant during the day, it is even more so when the sun goes down. After a day shopping and eating your way through Charleston, why not start your night out at the Planters Inn’s in-house restaurant, Peninsula Grill. Top off your dinner of oysters, foie gras, lobster, and other delicacies with an Ultimate Coconut Cake Martini (or three).
