Smack bam in the heart of Vienna’s second district and former Jewish quarter, Leopoldstadt, is the understated and homey Graetzlhotel Karmelitermarkt. Run on the ethos of encouraging guests to really experience the true art of Viennese living, the hotel’s suites are housed in different buildings that were once workshops and stores of the surrounding neighbourhood. As your home away from home, Graetzlhotel Karmelitermarkt allows you to stray away from the beaten touristy path and live your days in Vienna as a true local.
Top tips
1. All the suites of Graetzlhotel Karmelitermarkt are adorably decorated and are incredibly well-appointed; even complete with a kitchenette stocked with vintage crockery, a Nespresso maker, quality Samovar teas and a minibar. That being said, if you’re looking for a bit more privacy during your stay, previous guests have recommended booking a courtyard view suite.
2. There are a tonne of things to see and do in Leopoldstadt and all of them are just a stone’s throw away from the hotel. There’s the Karmelitermarkt’s farmers’ market, museums, deli-cafes, concert halls and even craft shops. Vienna’s former Jewish quarter offers a step back in time and into old-world Vienna, where everybody knows everybody and where you can enjoy new stories of a bygone era. Pro-tip: there is neighbourhood guide and a walking map in every room.
3. The best way to get to the nitty-gritty of Vienna and really get to know the local streets is to take it by bicycle. Lucky for you, the Graetzlhotel Karmelitermarkt offers its guests free (yes, absolutely free) use of it’s bicycles. If you’re taking a romantic ride through Vienna, make sure to request a picnic basket filled with local goodies to take with you. Pro tip: ride down to the Danube Canal and spend your afternoon having a lazy waterside picnic.
4. It is worth noting that the Graetzlhotel Karmelitermarkt is an independent style accommodation. This means that their service is designed to be very much relaxed and non-intrusive. So, if you’re hoping to be waited on hand-and-foot, perhaps this hotel is not the one for you.
5. Getting around greater Vienna is incredibly easy during your stay at Graetzlhotel Karmelitermarkt; you’re only a 3 minute walk to the nearest tram stop, Karmeliterplatz, and a literal 1 minute walk to the nearest bus stop, Tandelmarktgasse.
