Top tips
1. All the suites of Huka Lodge are equally well appointed and designed in a way that exudes fabulous country living. Picking a room at this lodge solely boils down to how much space you need and how much privacy you desire. For larger groups of travellers or families, it is recommended that you book either the 2-bedroom Alan Pye Cottage or the 4-bedroom Owner’s Cottage. These cottages allow you a higher level of privacy while still being able to enjoy the impeccable services offered by Huka Lodge. For families with small children, it should be noted that there are no TV’s in the rooms.
2. If you or anyone you are travelling with has mobility issues, it would be wise to let the lodge know and arrange to be given a suite closer to the main areas. This is because, according to previous guests, a lot of the suites are quite a walk away from the main area and may pose as a challenge for those with mobility issues.
3. You can’t visit this historic fishing lodge without trying your hand at some angler action. Lucky for you, Huka Lodge have a selected group of partner operators that offer scenic lake cruises and fishing experiences on Lake Taupo. From fly fishing and trolling, there’s a style of fishing that would suit any angler at any skill level. If fishing is not your speed however, try out any one of the lake cruises available; A kayak can even be arranged for you to explore the inlets of the Western Bays.
4. It is worth noting that lunch is not included in your room rate. If you have a hire car, use this opportunity to explore the culinary options that the surrounding area has to offer. By having lunch at one of the cheaper alternatives, you may even be able to save a little bit of money while you’re at it. While breakfast and dinner are included in the room rate, it is worth keeping in mind that dinner is a set tasting menu meaning you will not be able to choose a dish ala-carte. That being said, previous guests have insisted that the food provided is top-notch.
5. If you don’t hire a car, you can still explore the grounds and surrounding area on your own thanks to the lodge’s complimentary mountain bikes. Pro tip: if you want to add some romance to your biking adventure, pack yourself some wine and a picnic basket full of local goodies.
