If the overwater bungalows of the Maldives and Bora Bora are calling you but your purse strings are pulling you back to reality, we may have found you a (somewhat) happy medium in AVANI Sepang Goldcoast Resort. Located off the coast of tropical Malaysia and only an hour and a half from Kuala Lumpur’s city centre, AVANI Sepang Goldcoast Resort offers guests a Maldive-esque experience on a budget. While you may not be able to swim in the waters underneath your villa (like you would in the Maldives), you will be able to enjoy amazing sunset views and the peacefulness and serenity of staying in a luxury villa way out over a calm bay.

Top Tips

  • The main attractions of the AVANI Sepang Goldcoast Resort are the amazing sunset and sunrise views. Previous guests have mentioned that the sun sets to the left side of the hotel and thus the sun rises to the right. So if you prefer one over the other, keep that in mind when making your booking.

  • Even though you can’t swim in the waters underneath the villas, the resort offers so many other facilities that make up for what they are lacking. From the amazing infinity pool, to the delicious local food,  to the world-class spa facilities, you honestly wouldn’t want for anything more. That being said, you have to keep your expectations in check. If you’re expecting surroundings and atmosphere like the Maldives or Bora Bora, you might be disappointed. But if you take into account the price you’re paying and the facilities made available to you, you will walk away very happy.

  • The entire resort is a lot bigger than it looks online (it takes a full 15 minutes to walk from the furthest villa to the reception building). So, if you are travelling with children, the elderly, or travellers with mobility issues, make sure to request a villa closer to the main building to make commuting to the common areas a bit easier.

  • While the rooms and facilities are of the standard one would expect for a resort like this, there are a few things that are a little bit different and need to be mentioned beforehand. The biggest one brought up by previous guests is that there is a water heater switch that needs to be turned on before you hop into the shower (if not, you’re going to end up with an icy cold surprise).

  • Getting to AVANI Sepang Goldcoast Resort is incredibly easy thanks to its proximity to not only Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur, but also to the city’s main airport, KLIA. If you’re coming from the Kuala Lumpur, either hire a car (there’s plenty of parking at the resort) or hop in an uber or taxi (fare for both are surprisingly cheap). If you’re flying into KLIA, call the resort beforehand to arrange an airport transfer for you. Leaving the resort without your own car however, you are only allowed to use the resort’s contracted transportation service, so keep that in mind before trying to book your own taxi.

With close to 10 years in the travel industry, it's safe to say that I'm a travel addict.

Since my first flight at 8 months of age, I've travelled extensively through Europe, Asia, the South Pacific and part of North America. Some of the highlights were sleeping under the stars in the Wahiba Sands in Oman, snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef, walking on the Great Wall of China, climbing the Eiffel Tower, cruising from St Petersburg to Moscow, eating streetfood in Penang, exploring the Rocky Mountains in Canada and hanging loose in Hawaii.

I currently spend all my time putting together epic life-changing mastermind retreats or meticulously planning Luxury Tailor-made holidays around the world.
