Ever wanted to learn to surf while still enjoying all the creature comforts you’re used to? Then Surfers Lodge Peniche, about 100 km from Lisbon, may be just what you’re after. Far from the surf shacks and run down hostels beach bums might be used to, Surfers Lodge Peniche offers a level of luxury usually unseen by hotels in this niche. Offering both accommodation and surf lessons for guests with any skill level, Surfers Lodge Peniche exists to bridge the gap between hardcore surfers and novice boardies; creating an atmosphere that is welcoming to all, relaxed, and luxurious.

Top tips

1. The Surfers Lodge Peniche offers a myriad of room sizes to choose from. From the Beatles Suite all the way to the Family Room, there is a space suited for traveller groups of almost any size. While most of the rooms are styled the same way, if you’re looking to up the ante during your stay, we recommend booking the Bali Suite; a room touted as the most romantic place in the lodge and perfectly suited for people in the honeymoon state of mind. If you’re travelling with children, we recommend booking the Family Room that can sleep up to 6 people comfortably in bunk beds. Pro tip: while the hotel is a surfers lodge, non surfers are more than welcome to stay.

2. The pièce de résistance of Surfers Lodge Peniche has to be their week-long Surf Academy. Your surf education will begin with an emphasis on warm-ups, which include crossfit style circuits, yoga sequences and skateboarding to improve your balance. Then you move on to actually surfing. Once you’re done, you’re given an email recapping what you learned along with an evaluation of your strengths and weaknesses. This is all to ensure that you’ll be able to pick up where you left off wherever you end up surfing next. Pro tip: private surf lessons are also available upon request.

3. If you find yourself at Surfers Lodge Peniche on a Saturday during the mid or high season, head up to the Terrace to enjoy the Sunset Sessions. With a great mix of local and international DJ’s playing the best house, deep house, techno, and minimal music, it’s a great opportunity to mingle with fellow guests and locals alike. With a beautiful view of the sunset over Baleal, the Terrace is a great place to start your night or just unwind after a long surf holiday week. Pro tip: dogs and children are more than welcome.

4. Yoga and surfing almost always come hand-in-hand so it’s not a surprise that Surfers Lodge Peniche offers yoga classes as well. With the philosophy of using yoga to help you recover faster and avoid soreness, while practicing mental flow and focus to fuel your surfing, the hotel offers Hatha/Vinyasa classes appropriate for all levels.

5. While Peniche is a little sleepier than Lisbon, there is plenty of places to explore. Besides fantastic beaches and surf events, you may also want to explore Fortaleza de Peniche (a cliff-top fortress controlling the port was built by King John III in 1557), visit the Berlengas Archipelago (a natural reserve, with a colony of puffins and rich marine life in the water), or have a meal at Peniche Port (with its many bars and restaurants benefitting from the fresh seafood).

With close to 10 years in the travel industry, it's safe to say that I'm a travel addict.

Since my first flight at 8 months of age, I've travelled extensively through Europe, Asia, the South Pacific and part of North America. Some of the highlights were sleeping under the stars in the Wahiba Sands in Oman, snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef, walking on the Great Wall of China, climbing the Eiffel Tower, cruising from St Petersburg to Moscow, eating streetfood in Penang, exploring the Rocky Mountains in Canada and hanging loose in Hawaii.

I currently spend all my time putting together epic life-changing mastermind retreats or meticulously planning Luxury Tailor-made holidays around the world.
